A Family history.

Alexander (Sasha) Blackwood was born in Montréal, Canada in 1952. His father before him, John Blackwood, started a small jewellery business after he and his mother immigrated to Montréal from Dresden, Germany in the 50s. While in High School, Sasha had a passion for art and as an apprentice would spend hours after school in his father’s workshop sculpting and assisting the goldsmiths with their work. In the early 70s he travelled to Caracas, Venezuela where he was enchanted by the true Bohemian spirit and decided to stay and would end up living there. Inspired by the land and the people he met, it was there where Sasha cultivated his passion for jewellery design and custom one of a kind pieces.

After having spent six years in Venezuela, he was drawn back to his home in Montréal where he worked alongside his father as a goldsmith, eventually taking on the role as head designer.  It was at this time that he took on the task of redesigning the brand aesthetic into a more contemporary and modern style. The new designs were a huge success and as a result the business thrived.

Sasha currently works with a variety of precious metals; however, he loves to experiment with different elements such as briar wood, plastics, unconventional metals and whatever is durable and workable.

His designs draw inspiration from his life experiences, his love for architecture, nature, and minimalism. He also loves to play with the contrast between the natural and manufactured world. This love brought on an appreciation for textures, such as bark from trees, the raw curves and movement found in nature and the colours of the wild. Walking along the coast he is moved by the sea, the colours of stones, sand and the shells and their shapes.
